Episode Transcript
[00:00:08] Speaker A: So anyway, I was walking around because I found him and I walked back and yeah, Bill said, you know what I could go for right now? He said, go for a nice. It's not really what I. Juicy glass of wine. He said. He said juicy with a emphasis on the juice.
[00:00:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:00:20] Speaker C: Glass of wine. Watch Steel Magnolias and yeah, menstruate on the couch. That's where you're at.
[00:00:26] Speaker A: That's a good time.
[00:00:28] Speaker C: Let me figure out.
[00:00:29] Speaker B: Aaron. I'm not menstruating anymore. I'm barren like my wife.
[00:00:33] Speaker A: Mark, can you say something to the mic? I get these levels right.
[00:00:37] Speaker B: Oh, check one siblings. Son of bitch. Shit.
[00:00:41] Speaker C: I'm coming through. Okay.
[00:00:42] Speaker B: Son of bitch seems.
[00:00:44] Speaker A: Oh, bop bop bop, bop, bop, bop, bop bop.
[00:00:46] Speaker C: All right.
[00:00:47] Speaker B: Do you know what? That.
[00:00:48] Speaker C: That's a new Korean restaurant.
[00:00:51] Speaker A: The one that opened up just up the street there.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:00:55] Speaker A: I just. I just saw this. It's coming soon.
[00:00:56] Speaker B: Better edit that out. I hope you didn't record.
[00:00:58] Speaker A: We can just put a big long beep over the top of it.
[00:01:00] Speaker B: I didn't say that racist shit.
[00:01:05] Speaker C: Tell me, are you saying that it's racist that there could be a Korean restaurant called Bop Bop Bop Bop?
[00:01:11] Speaker A: What race is Korea?
[00:01:12] Speaker B: Is there one? Because if there's not, then that's nationalistic.
What?
[00:01:18] Speaker A: It's not racist. No race called Korean.
[00:01:20] Speaker C: If I opened a rest. A Korean restaurant, I would call it. Who put the bimmy bop in the Bop da bop dibop.
Thai restaurants make jokes all the time.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: Yeah, Taiwan on. You could put other Thai restaurant jokes.
[00:01:37] Speaker C: There's one on the way down. California. What are they called?
[00:01:40] Speaker B: Oh, Thai thing.
[00:01:42] Speaker C: What you want? I think. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:01:44] Speaker B: You want. That's not tie. That's be Chinese.
[00:01:46] Speaker A: There was a place on the south side I used to date a woman that lived in.
Who cares? But it was by Midway Airport in. She must have been rough.
[00:01:54] Speaker B: Yeah, she lived down that way.
[00:01:57] Speaker A: She lived at the airport.
[00:02:01] Speaker C: Visitor in prison?
[00:02:03] Speaker A: Well, it depends. Depends on what time of the year it was. No offense, but there's a place called Walk this Way.
[00:02:10] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:02:11] Speaker A: You could play MBOP by Hanson all day at your Korean place. Mark.
[00:02:14] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:02:15] Speaker A: On loop.
[00:02:16] Speaker B: Walks a matter you like Bullwinkle? What's the matter you? Isn't that where he went to college? What's the matter you?
[00:02:24] Speaker C: There was a.
There was a.
Wow. This. This podcast is sailing close.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: I think it's going well.
[00:02:32] Speaker B: We're having wine.
You're the only.
[00:02:35] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Cheers.
[00:02:36] Speaker B: Cheers.
[00:02:37] Speaker C: To our health.
[00:02:37] Speaker B: To your safe return from your voyage overseas.
[00:02:40] Speaker A: Ah, yes.
Over what, over a bay?
[00:02:43] Speaker B: Well, did you go. Which way did you go? Did you go over land or did you go around?
[00:02:46] Speaker A: I flew over the Atlantic Ocean, over Europe and then Russia and then Asia and then probably Pacific Ocean, San Francisco.
[00:02:54] Speaker C: It probably took as long as an American train did.
[00:02:58] Speaker B: What kind of wine is this? I'm trying to put.
[00:03:00] Speaker A: It's a Sauvignon blanc.
[00:03:02] Speaker B: Let me. Is it a Carl Rossi or.
[00:03:04] Speaker A: It's a line 39.
[00:03:07] Speaker B: That a high end brand?
[00:03:08] Speaker A: No, it's, it's. It's high end enough. But get a deal on it so we can keep the glasses of wine cheap at the bar.
[00:03:14] Speaker B: Now I didn't pay anything for them. I gotta get a bill for this on the way.
[00:03:17] Speaker A: Yes, you will get an invoice in the mail.
[00:03:19] Speaker B: One of the waitresses gonna pop in here?
[00:03:20] Speaker A: Yeah, Jenna's on her way.
[00:03:23] Speaker B: Take me with the bill.
[00:03:25] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:03:25] Speaker B: Gratis. On the house.
[00:03:27] Speaker C: That's like two glasses of wine.
[00:03:28] Speaker B: I don't know. I didn't. Maybe. I don't. I don't need two glasses.
[00:03:32] Speaker A: It's called the Club Pour.
[00:03:33] Speaker B: I'll swerve out of here.
[00:03:34] Speaker A: It's the bill. Poor. Well, we're doing two episodes, so you got plenty. Oh, yeah.
[00:03:37] Speaker B: Well, no, we don't. Do too.
[00:03:38] Speaker C: Oh, wait, you don't remind me of that.
[00:03:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:03:41] Speaker A: Mark's depressed.
[00:03:42] Speaker B: Yeah. Why are you so depressed? The weight loss?
[00:03:44] Speaker C: Maybe. Maybe it's because I watched. Maybe it's because I watched a 35 year old special I can't wait to talk about followed by a man who's been dead for 60 years.
[00:03:57] Speaker B: Oh, I thought you're.
[00:03:58] Speaker C: Yeah, I guess we're. I guess we're pandering to the younger audience now. Again, real pop.
[00:04:03] Speaker B: Listen, I.
[00:04:04] Speaker A: Whatever.
[00:04:04] Speaker B: Swerve. This show is taken with these two next two comedians we're going to talk about.
I like it. I think we more bizarre.
[00:04:12] Speaker A: We got to get deeper into. It's going to be interesting.
[00:04:15] Speaker B: No more what's on Netflix right now.
[00:04:17] Speaker A: I, I think that's. That's the direction this podcast should go anyway. It should be less like what we think about a special and more like, isn't this interesting? Well, isn't that special?
Yeah, you know, talking about like what. Why the special exists, not what the content of the special was.
[00:04:32] Speaker B: Yeah, nobody wants to hear our thoughts on the content.
[00:04:34] Speaker A: No, nobody gives a shit what we think about a comedy special.
[00:04:36] Speaker B: I thought about today as I was watching these, like, you know, we're archivists or comedy historians. We could become the foremost Thinkers on stand up comedy. If we really delve into academically into
[00:04:52] Speaker C: stand up comedy, you know how many followers archivists have?
[00:04:56] Speaker B: Not worried about that. My mic sounds off.
[00:04:58] Speaker A: What's archivists?
[00:04:59] Speaker B: Sounds tinny.
[00:05:00] Speaker A: Oh, really?
[00:05:02] Speaker B: Check.
[00:05:02] Speaker A: Maybe it's try speaking through your nose a little more.
[00:05:05] Speaker B: Son of shit. I'm getting reverb in the mic.
[00:05:08] Speaker A: You're not getting reverb.
[00:05:10] Speaker B: Do I sound all right to you? Yeah, maybe I'm talking too close. Bill began says I talk too loud into the mic, so you got to stop that. So I'm going to try and talk more normal, but I'm going to hold the mic like this.
Like Elvis Costello.
[00:05:24] Speaker C: No, you're holding it like that twat from Limp Bizkit.
[00:05:28] Speaker B: Yeah. Fred Durst.
[00:05:29] Speaker A: Fred Durst.
[00:05:30] Speaker C: Do you remember. Do you remember Mac Lin's? No. Who. Which one was your acolyte? Was that Mac Lindsay?
[00:05:36] Speaker B: Which one?
I mean, several.
[00:05:38] Speaker C: Yeah, several.
[00:05:40] Speaker B: Yeah. I didn't.
[00:05:40] Speaker C: It was the Jar of Pubes kid.
[00:05:43] Speaker B: Oh, Mitch Manzi.
[00:05:46] Speaker C: Mitch Manzi. So it was Mitch Manzi and there was Mac Lindsay. Yeah, Mac Lindsay used to hold the mic like Fred Durst, and he had, like, you know those ridiculous trousers they wore?
[00:05:57] Speaker B: He had the big baggie. Yeah, trousers.
[00:05:59] Speaker A: Jinko jeans. Remember those? Jinko jeans with the back pocket that went down to your ankle?
[00:06:05] Speaker B: Oh, my God. I saw a guy.
[00:06:07] Speaker A: You had to put your whole arm in your pocket to get your wallet out.
[00:06:11] Speaker B: Those. You get a Chess King or the Buckle.
[00:06:14] Speaker A: I'm not familiar.
[00:06:15] Speaker B: These are stores in the mall that would sell kind of, you know, the urban wear of the day.
[00:06:20] Speaker A: Oh, I don't think we had them in Williamsville, New York.
[00:06:23] Speaker B: You probably did Chess King. I would think you did. That's more of an east coast. Oh, yeah. Retailer. Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, yeah, I. I don't know this. You know, it's hard to hold the mic.
So fat. A podcast mic. People can't see this, but this is such a big fat mic.
[00:06:43] Speaker A: Where's my sound effect for that?
[00:06:45] Speaker B: Yeah, where are the sound effects?
I heard one listener talking to somebody else. I overheard them talking about our program.
[00:06:57] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:06:58] Speaker B: I was at a bar and I
[00:06:58] Speaker A: heard somebody talking about, you're having a nice glass. You're having a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.
[00:07:02] Speaker B: They didn't know getting your nose into it.
[00:07:04] Speaker A: Danielle Steele book.
[00:07:05] Speaker B: Yeah.
They didn't know it was me from the show.
[00:07:08] Speaker A: But they're talking because they only know you're. They only. They know your voice.
[00:07:11] Speaker B: They know my voice.
[00:07:12] Speaker A: So if you don't say anything. They don't know it's you.
[00:07:13] Speaker B: Right.
[00:07:14] Speaker A: The moment you open your mouth, everybody. Everybody flocks to the right.
[00:07:17] Speaker B: And so they're talking about the show. I mean, a lot of people talking about the show, and they said it's very low production value.
[00:07:25] Speaker A: Oh, is that right?
[00:07:26] Speaker B: Yeah. I said, well, I didn't say anything, but I thought to myself, what about the sound effects?
[00:07:30] Speaker A: Sound effects, Right.
[00:07:31] Speaker C: We use one of those once every three weeks, right?
[00:07:34] Speaker A: Yeah, once every three weeks. And sometimes I throw a little YouTube song in there.
We've got. We've got the sloth. AI pictures. What do you mean?
[00:07:42] Speaker B: I. I can't stand that AI shit.
[00:07:46] Speaker C: Keeping me going is the sloth.
[00:07:48] Speaker B: Yeah, you know, people upset because it upsets me. That's what keeps you going.
[00:07:51] Speaker A: This sort of thing is commonly called AI slop. But, you know, in our. In our case, it's AI Sloth.
[00:07:58] Speaker C: It could literally be the only thing about this podcast that appeals to anyone under the age of 50 at this point.
[00:08:04] Speaker B: Yeah, we're not. We're not for the younger crowd.
[00:08:06] Speaker A: You don't think my sound effects.
[00:08:07] Speaker B: Although I know some of the. There you go. I know some of the listeners who listen in the car, they are in the 50 ish range, have their kids in the car, and some of the kids have told me they enjoy it.
[00:08:20] Speaker A: Oh, should I cut back on the obscenities?
[00:08:22] Speaker C: How many.
[00:08:23] Speaker B: Not young kids.
[00:08:24] Speaker C: How many episodes of your youth listened to?
Conservative estimate between all 27 of them.
[00:08:33] Speaker B: None.
[00:08:34] Speaker C: Probably none. So, yeah, no, it's.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: Sometimes I'll play it in the car when they're. When I'm shuttling them from practice to school and stuff like that, and. But I have to turn it off because we get into territory that's not for their ears because it's personal.
[00:08:46] Speaker A: I can see that.
[00:08:46] Speaker B: You know, and you'll bring up stuff that I don't.
[00:08:47] Speaker A: They don't want to hear that either.
[00:08:49] Speaker B: They don't.
[00:08:49] Speaker A: Come on.
[00:08:50] Speaker B: They don't want to hear me talk about making love to my wife.
[00:08:53] Speaker A: Makes for an uncomfortable car ride.
[00:08:54] Speaker B: No, they don't want to hear think about me making love to their mother.
[00:08:57] Speaker A: Nobody does.
[00:08:58] Speaker B: You guys have.
Oh, I thought you did.
Well, I'm just glad we're here, honestly, because two weeks ago, Christian tried to put the kibosh on this whole program and run it off the rails, and you seem to be on board with it.
And I had to say, you know, sos that if you cancel the show, I'll end my life.
[00:09:23] Speaker A: Yeah, those were the Terms. And that's why we're here today.
[00:09:29] Speaker B: And I mean to make light of that. But. Yeah, I need this.
[00:09:34] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:09:34] Speaker B: More than you know.
[00:09:35] Speaker A: He's got his glass of wine in his hand. Yeah.
Oh, boy.
[00:09:40] Speaker B: It's very.
[00:09:41] Speaker A: And it starts very sour. Yeah, that.
[00:09:43] Speaker B: Is this expired or has it been the top?
[00:09:45] Speaker A: No, that's a Sauvignon Blanche flavor. It's usually very tart.
[00:09:49] Speaker B: Very tart.
[00:09:50] Speaker A: Yeah. I like it for that reason. I don't like. I don't like sweet, sugary, like Chardonnay wine.
[00:09:55] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:09:56] Speaker C: I probably just put too much lemon juice in the.
[00:09:59] Speaker B: Oh, in the wine. Yeah, that's how you fill them back up.
[00:10:02] Speaker C: That's how I top them off, make the margin.
[00:10:07] Speaker A: Have you ever, in your drinking days, did you ever go to a bar and order something they pour out of the bottle and you take a sip and. You know, that's.
For instance, I once stopped at a bar that doesn't exist anymore with a bar back that I worked with, and we ordered two shots of Jameson and they gave them to us in these giant glasses and we threw them back and we looked at each other. That's not Jameson. We watched him pour out of the bottle. But you drank it and you know, that's Barton's. That's, you know, a plastic handle that they just dumped in there.
[00:10:29] Speaker C: That's the Lincoln Restaurant.
[00:10:30] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, they did that there.
[00:10:33] Speaker C: Sam Meckling from Melot once told me, he goes, they don't even make half of these bottle designs anymore.
He's like, that bottle hasn't existed since the 70s. And they seem full bottle perennially.
[00:10:47] Speaker B: They just put in bottom shelf booze.
[00:10:49] Speaker C: Yeah, they're just off to. In Costco. And in it goes.
[00:10:52] Speaker B: I'm sure a lot of places do that.
[00:10:54] Speaker A: When I was. When I was just out of college, I lived with a good friend of mine, Jed Pavlovich, and he would.
[00:10:59] Speaker B: What's up, Jed?
[00:11:00] Speaker A: He would put Barton's, you know, bottom shelf vodka through a Brita water filter over and over and over again.
[00:11:07] Speaker B: Why?
[00:11:07] Speaker A: To improve thinking that he could then pour it into a more expensive bottle of an empty bottle of vodka, bring it to a party, and pass it off as a more premium vodka.
[00:11:15] Speaker B: That's a lot of work.
[00:11:16] Speaker A: It's a lot of work. One for. For two, it doesn't work. It still tastes like shit. But three, after all of that, he would pour it into a Sky vodka bottle, which is not that much better.
[00:11:28] Speaker B: You know, Sky's mid.
[00:11:30] Speaker A: It's mid. But if you're gonna go through all that effort to try to impress people. Wouldn't you pick a gray goose or something like that?
[00:11:35] Speaker B: Well, maybe he picked sky because he didn't want to, you know.
[00:11:37] Speaker A: Oh yeah, he's. Maybe he was thinking people definitely know this is a grey goose, but nobody's gonna question that. This.
Who would refill a stock bottle? See, I've been making fun of him for 20 years.
[00:11:46] Speaker B: I never heard of Barton's. Is that a local flavor?
[00:11:48] Speaker A: Oh yeah, maybe it is. It's like the big like the plastic handle Bukoff.
[00:11:53] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:54] Speaker A: Like clean your shoes with it.
[00:11:56] Speaker C: Pop off.
[00:11:57] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:57] Speaker C: Smirnoff.
[00:11:58] Speaker B: No, Smirnoff. Smirnoff's upper mid.
Yeah, upper mid.
[00:12:03] Speaker A: I've known some like some hardcore vodka drinkers in my day that swear by Smirnoff. They say that like my father the best, you know, for the price.
[00:12:10] Speaker B: Yeah. My father was a everyday vodka drinker. I know it's hard to believe.
And he would go to a restaurant, embarrass us by going to the bar, get a smearing off on the rocks. And I'd be like, oh God.
[00:12:21] Speaker A: Oh yeah.
[00:12:22] Speaker B: Who orders that?
You know who else had rot gut booze. And I use that term because that's what you called it. My mother visited the Red lion once for. For one. A one time event years ago.
It doesn't matter what the event was. But my mother was there.
My mother was at this event. Don't.
And she got.
[00:12:45] Speaker C: That entire event was rock got.
[00:12:47] Speaker B: But carry on.
[00:12:48] Speaker A: What was it?
[00:12:49] Speaker B: This is a get together of comedians and all right. Friends and family. It was a friends and family comedians get together.
And she woke up horribly hungover. Then if she was a drinker, you know, and the next morning she goes, that, that was a rot gut booze at that Red Lion.
[00:13:05] Speaker C: He has. Have you been in the new Red Lion?
[00:13:09] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:13:09] Speaker C: There's a goddamn 20 foot high wall of whiskey.
[00:13:13] Speaker B: High end whiskey.
[00:13:14] Speaker A: Yeah. I used to play piano next door at that supper club and I would go over there.
[00:13:17] Speaker C: Oh yeah? Yeah. Holy shit. There's like. There's got to be 10 grands worth of whiskey just on them shelves.
[00:13:25] Speaker A: I was at Best Intentions down the street yesterday on Armitage. Over here they've got.
How do I describe this? They have, you know those.
[00:13:34] Speaker B: What's Best Intentions.
[00:13:35] Speaker A: It's a really cool bar down Armitage.
Oh it was west of here, like by like a mile.
[00:13:40] Speaker B: Does it have a lip?
[00:13:41] Speaker A: It doesn't have a sign. It's got nothing. It's just got a glass Block wall. And you walk in there. Great music, great backyard.
[00:13:48] Speaker B: Hey, were you at the Four Four Moons the other night?
[00:13:51] Speaker C: Let him finish the anecdote.
[00:13:52] Speaker B: Good. Yeah, I think I saw you walk when I walked by, but I.
Oh, really?
Yeah, like two.
[00:13:59] Speaker A: Saturday. I was there on Saturday. I met Borky over there and we went.
[00:14:02] Speaker B: No, this would have been Friday.
[00:14:03] Speaker A: No, I wasn't there Friday.
Anyway, they have a long story of. It doesn't matter how they display the sign, but they have a website that's just called Booze. We have dot com, and it's just a website that you go to, and it just lists all the booze they
[00:14:17] Speaker B: have at the bar.
[00:14:19] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:19] Speaker B: So they have a. They have websites that's separate. Yeah. From the bar that has the list.
[00:14:23] Speaker A: Yeah, it's just. It's just boozewehave.com.
[00:14:26] Speaker B: so they own that, and they just put there kind of like, I have a full life.
[00:14:29] Speaker A: Yeah. Is that website up yet?
[00:14:31] Speaker B: Yeah, it's. It's sort of up.
[00:14:33] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah, I don't mind neither. I keep getting. Every now every month, I get a notification that they've charged me another $34 for my website.
[00:14:41] Speaker B: You're paying $34 a month?
[00:14:43] Speaker A: Yeah, I think so.
[00:14:43] Speaker B: No, no, no.
[00:14:45] Speaker C: That's insane. It's $10 a year for the redirect.
[00:14:50] Speaker A: What?
[00:14:51] Speaker C: And then I don't know what WIX is. Basic.
[00:14:53] Speaker A: I'm getting scammed.
[00:14:55] Speaker C: You are.
[00:14:55] Speaker A: I know. And I keep forgetting to do anything about it.
[00:14:58] Speaker C: You like. You like Bill o' Donnell walking into a tradesman's shop, and they just go, let's back up the truck and ring up the register.
[00:15:07] Speaker A: It was supposed to just be for the one month, you know, and I was gonna.
[00:15:10] Speaker B: Oh, so you like. It's like. Like ordering.
[00:15:13] Speaker A: It's like it automatically renews streaming service
[00:15:15] Speaker B: that you forgot to cancel.
[00:15:17] Speaker A: Right, Exactly.
[00:15:18] Speaker B: Yeah. She just paid the yearly fee, which is probably $5 more.
[00:15:22] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:15:22] Speaker A: I don't know.
[00:15:24] Speaker B: You've got tons of money.
[00:15:25] Speaker A: I know. I'm rich.
[00:15:25] Speaker B: You travel more than anyone I know. I don't know where you get the money. I would listen to the books here and see if he's not skimming or getting deep down into the.
[00:15:35] Speaker A: Hey, mind your own business, Bill.
Get out of my affairs.
[00:15:39] Speaker B: But, yeah, you. You put us on hiatus, you know?
[00:15:42] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:15:43] Speaker B: You almost. You try to kibosh the show, and then you put us on hiatus.
[00:15:46] Speaker A: I didn't try to kibosh the show. I saw.
[00:15:49] Speaker B: Very excited.
[00:15:50] Speaker A: I saw that there was an issue and I addressed it because I'm the kind of guy that gets to the bottom of things. I don't let things just ride and keep doing something that nobody wants to do.
[00:15:59] Speaker B: Here's what I think. I think you two conspired. Or you said, I know we got to pull the pole. I know you fucking show.
[00:16:05] Speaker A: No, Mark had nothing to do with it. It was my own independent decision.
[00:16:08] Speaker C: I thought I'd very clearly stated that I hate this show.
Episode one.
[00:16:13] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:16:14] Speaker C: I'm not sneaking around in the back going, are you jacking that off?
[00:16:18] Speaker B: No, just kind of, I guess, making an obscene gesture. Downhill skiing over here.
[00:16:26] Speaker C: Yeah. Well, anyway, I resent the implication that I've been underhanded about my opinion of this show.
[00:16:32] Speaker B: It's not about your opinion. We know your opinion. But are you trying to sack it?
Are you trying to get a mutiny going here?
[00:16:40] Speaker C: I can bankrupt this venue and then we'll be.
[00:16:42] Speaker B: Yeah, we would have to go to your place.
[00:16:45] Speaker A: Yeah, we could do it in the basement. Oh, we should have basement.
[00:16:47] Speaker B: Anyway, let's do it. Let's do an episode live from basement.
[00:16:51] Speaker A: Live from the basement.
[00:16:52] Speaker B: Can we do that? Could we get this shit over there?
[00:16:54] Speaker C: Because without cameras, it's gonna really zip.
[00:16:58] Speaker A: We'll put up. I'll put it on YouTube.
I'll set my phone up.
[00:17:01] Speaker C: Have you got Access to the lincolnlodgemail.com Apple ID for podcast purposes? I don't think you are.
[00:17:10] Speaker A: No, I don't think so.
[00:17:11] Speaker C: We're struggling with it. Someone donated a computer that we could.
[00:17:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:16] Speaker C: Record.
[00:17:16] Speaker A: Oh.
[00:17:17] Speaker C: But there's a whole Apple ID shenanigans going on. We can get into the Apple ID for the Lincoln Lodge.
Well, various people.
[00:17:27] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:17:28] Speaker C: And anyone can, but.
[00:17:30] Speaker A: I see, I see.
[00:17:31] Speaker C: But we have these goddamn security questions that we can't get through.
[00:17:34] Speaker A: Okay.
You want me to take a whack at it?
[00:17:38] Speaker C: Well, I don't know what. These security questions were probably set up by someone else.
[00:17:43] Speaker A: You spend a day guessing.
[00:17:45] Speaker C: Yeah. And it's like, he who shan't be named. Yeah. And so now we're stuck at this wall, and I need the Apple ID to reimage this computer.
[00:17:55] Speaker A: So somebody's gotta go through the whole process of, like, calling up Apple or however.
[00:17:59] Speaker C: You're listening to the thrilling podcast.
[00:18:02] Speaker B: Stop. Hey, this is commenting when it's not going.
[00:18:05] Speaker A: We're showing them how the sausages made a little peek behind the curtain.
[00:18:08] Speaker C: So, anyway, I need to get into this sodding Apple id.
[00:18:10] Speaker A: Yeah, let's get into the sodding Apple id. We'll do it.
[00:18:13] Speaker B: All right.
[00:18:14] Speaker C: Well, what the hell did you do to them?
[00:18:16] Speaker A: What is that?
[00:18:16] Speaker B: I didn't do nothing to them.
[00:18:17] Speaker C: Yeah, smuggle them in Vegas ass.
[00:18:22] Speaker B: When? When Christian said he was going to be late. I veered off the road on my way here, and I'm starving, and I said, well, I'll get some food, since we'll be waiting anyway. And I got us each a pork tamale.
[00:18:35] Speaker A: Wow.
From where?
[00:18:36] Speaker B: Agora Market. Still hot.
[00:18:38] Speaker A: Oh, you know.
[00:18:39] Speaker B: Napkins over there?
[00:18:40] Speaker A: No, but there are some up front.
[00:18:44] Speaker C: So you're full. Not vegetarian.
[00:18:46] Speaker B: Yeah, listen, I'm drinking again. I'm eating. I think I'm having a nervous breakdown.
[00:18:50] Speaker A: You're off the wagon.
[00:18:51] Speaker B: My life is not going well. Shout out to my wife, who said to me the other day, we're not winning, but we're a good team.
[00:19:00] Speaker A: Team.
That's a good one.
[00:19:02] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:19:02] Speaker B: I was like, damn, you just come up with that? She's like, yeah, like, we're not winning right now. We're not winning right now.
[00:19:08] Speaker A: How many good teams had a softball tonight?
[00:19:10] Speaker B: Yeah. That's good.
[00:19:11] Speaker A: Yeah. Tonight we got playoffs.
[00:19:13] Speaker B: Meaning our life is going bad.
[00:19:15] Speaker A: Is life really going bad, though?
[00:19:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:19:17] Speaker A: You seem okay.
[00:19:18] Speaker C: I'm not coasting towards a fat retirement check.
[00:19:23] Speaker A: Are you also depressed?
[00:19:25] Speaker C: The youth?
[00:19:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:19:26] Speaker A: That's a depression table.
[00:19:28] Speaker B: I. I guess, yeah, I'm depressed. Yeah.
[00:19:30] Speaker C: I hesitate to say depressed. I find that a little trite.
[00:19:34] Speaker B: Well, listen, I think the last time we recorded, I said, some listeners said, you sound like you were, like, on some kind of, like, manic upswing. Like you. You sounded to them like you're doing well. These are objective listeners who, you know, don't know you. And then I saw some people recently. I said, yeah, no, he's back down. Like, you're depressed again. As of last episode or the last couple episodes, you're down in the dumps again.
[00:19:56] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm not, according to them.
[00:19:57] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:19:58] Speaker C: Like I said, I don't like to bandy around the word depressed because it
[00:20:02] Speaker A: could be a lot worse.
[00:20:03] Speaker B: You're really depressed.
[00:20:05] Speaker C: No, I'm disappointed in the decisions I'm making. I'm not functioning well.
[00:20:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:20:10] Speaker C: I'm making bad decisions.
That doesn't depress me. It irritates me, annoys me. Whatever you want.
[00:20:18] Speaker A: I know. I know the feeling. Yeah.
[00:20:20] Speaker B: What kind of bad decisions you're making around your eating?
[00:20:23] Speaker C: No, just.
I don't know. It's just decision making. Not well.
[00:20:30] Speaker B: Well, give us an example. No one wants to hear these vagaries.
[00:20:34] Speaker C: The other day, I had to get a GoPro to tape some footage from this venue. And I faffed around. Faffed around and ended up having to drive down to Pilsen at 4 o' clock on a Friday.
[00:20:45] Speaker B: Why Pil.
[00:20:46] Speaker C: Cuz that's where the camera was that I wanted to rent.
That is stupid.
[00:20:54] Speaker B: I think I have a GoPro. I'll just give it to you. I don't ever use it.
[00:20:56] Speaker C: Well, needed it for the night.
It had to be 4. What's the 4Q or whatever you call it?
[00:21:03] Speaker B: 4D.
[00:21:05] Speaker C: 4G. No, 4.
[00:21:07] Speaker B: 4D. 4.
[00:21:09] Speaker C: 4Skin for play for. He's a jolly good foreboding for something.
4K.
[00:21:20] Speaker B: 4K. Oh, this is. This is from like 20 years ago.
[00:21:23] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:21:24] Speaker B: Won't do you any good.
[00:21:25] Speaker C: So it had to be 4K, you know, for whatever reason.
So I have to traipse down the thing and what do I do? I wait till Friday afternoon.
[00:21:34] Speaker B: Oh, the traffic from here to Pilsen would be.
[00:21:36] Speaker C: Yeah.
And I'm just sitting in the car like, are you ever gonna wise up
[00:21:42] Speaker B: because you picked the wrong time to go down there.
[00:21:44] Speaker C: Yeah.
Yeah.
[00:21:46] Speaker B: I mean, you're still.
You're still brooding over that.
[00:21:49] Speaker C: I tell you what, you wouldn't believe what happened the other day. Oh my God. So I'm gonna redecorate the men's bogs and we're putting the hat room.
We're gonna. I'm gonna. I've got these. Someone donated these pinball back glasses, you know.
[00:22:07] Speaker B: Oh, those are cool.
[00:22:08] Speaker C: Yeah, cool, right?
So I. I scored one dirt cheap on the ebay.
[00:22:14] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:22:14] Speaker C: I pick it up and it's the best one. I've got two or three and it's the best one. And what you have to do is when you restoring them, you, you. Because the paint gets old and flakes off, you put a clear coat on the back to hold it on.
So you spray on clear coat paint. So it's like a see through.
[00:22:33] Speaker B: Yeah, it's like an. It works as an adhesive.
[00:22:36] Speaker C: No, it stops the paint flaking off. It's like another layer.
So I carry it out to the garage to just put this clear coat on the back. I go to open the garage door, I put the back glass, I lean it against the car, it swivel. I'm not talking like boom. It swiveled slightly because it was slightly off balance.
[00:23:01] Speaker B: The glass.
[00:23:01] Speaker C: The glass, it went and it effing exploded.
[00:23:10] Speaker A: How?
[00:23:11] Speaker C: Because tempered glass will do that.
[00:23:13] Speaker A: Oh, it was tempered glass. Yeah, I missed that part. I was out getting plates.
[00:23:16] Speaker C: Literally all I did is just leaning against the car.
[00:23:19] Speaker A: God, those moments, those are trying.
[00:23:23] Speaker C: I tell you what I said to. I said to Heather, my missus, I say if any of the.
If any of the neighbors want like checks in on what was going on at 3 o' clock this afternoon and says, is Mark okay? I'm telling you up front, I had a psychotic meltdown.
[00:23:45] Speaker A: She could tell him that he lost his tempered glass.
[00:23:47] Speaker B: Oh, well played. You're. You're very.
[00:23:50] Speaker C: I did more than that. I had a full on screaming.
[00:23:56] Speaker B: I don't.
[00:23:57] Speaker C: To the heavens.
[00:23:58] Speaker B: I see you muttering like no, like,
[00:24:00] Speaker C: oh, you're being sarcastic. Yeah, like I was screaming like a madman.
[00:24:05] Speaker B: Really?
And because you just lost a shitload of money. How much were they?
[00:24:09] Speaker C: No, it wasn't the money. It was the. The whole. What had happened?
[00:24:12] Speaker A: Yeah, right. Because you're looking at it like if I had just, you know, something else, what should. You wouldn't have.
[00:24:19] Speaker B: Not leaning against a car. But what.
[00:24:20] Speaker C: No, I don't know what I should have done.
[00:24:23] Speaker A: Yeah, that's the worst is that there's. There's no fixing. You can't go back. But. And it is. It's an irrational, you know, anger that swells up. I do the same thing. So I'm just saying. I know what you mean.
Yeah. Yeah.
[00:24:34] Speaker C: It wasn't like it fell. If it had fell over, I'd have been like, oh, that was a really stupid thing to do.
But this literally, I. It was against the wheel arch. So what happened was it's leaning flat and it just goes.
[00:24:50] Speaker B: So it moved on its own. It just started to slide.
[00:24:52] Speaker C: It just started to. To sort of settle in as it were against the thing that it had been leaned against.
And it went. Not only that, it exploded like tempered glass. Will.
It went all over the lawn. It went under the car.
So then I had to go out and get a Hoover. I got a Hoover from my basement
[00:25:13] Speaker B: and I mean like a shop vacation. Yeah.
[00:25:16] Speaker C: Yeah. Like who? And I'm hoovering my lawn.
[00:25:20] Speaker A: For real.
[00:25:21] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:25:21] Speaker B: That's funny because you don't want to step out there.
[00:25:24] Speaker A: That's. That's when the neighbors do come over and they're like, hey, is everything all right?
[00:25:27] Speaker C: Yeah. Serious.
[00:25:28] Speaker A: I saw him vacuuming the lawn like
[00:25:30] Speaker C: he screamed to the heaven for three minutes like a demented madman and then went and got a hoover and hoovered the grass of the lawn.
[00:25:42] Speaker B: Now when you.
[00:25:43] Speaker C: Is he okay, you keep saying hoover,
[00:25:45] Speaker B: but I can't imagine you out there with an indoor vacuum.
[00:25:48] Speaker C: You were using. It was an indoor vacuum over the grass.
[00:25:53] Speaker B: So I'm guessing you ruined the vacuum in the process.
Those are the sounds of Mark Gary eating a pork tamale.
[00:26:02] Speaker A: That was another juicy moment.
[00:26:05] Speaker C: And what I said to my missus, is this
[00:26:09] Speaker A: good, though?
[00:26:10] Speaker B: Isn't that a good pork?
[00:26:10] Speaker C: To me, what really gets my goat.
[00:26:14] Speaker B: It's not a goat, it's a goad. What gets my goad is the expression, not goat.
[00:26:18] Speaker C: It's not a really gets my goat is that I have destroyed a piece of unique artwork that may be the last example. What was that?
[00:26:29] Speaker B: What was it?
[00:26:30] Speaker C: It was a Happy Days. No, it was Panthera.
[00:26:35] Speaker B: Pan Pantera, the band.
[00:26:37] Speaker C: No, Panthera. So it's like a hot female, you know, Amazon type woman with two black panthers next to her. It was magnificent.
[00:26:47] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:47] Speaker C: And I. I destroyed it.
Wow.
[00:26:52] Speaker B: It's like a funeral in here now.
[00:26:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
This is sad.
[00:26:55] Speaker B: Listen, I've had that. Well, I've had something similar happen. I. We were redoing our bathroom and I was trying to. There's this giant glass bathroom shower door that I had carried from the bathroom out into the living room. And as I was holding it, it must have been the tension from the bar that goes through the middle of it, like, as I carried it out. And it's heavy.
Just as I was walking, I didn't hit anything. Didn't. It just.
Just, like, evaporated into a gazillion pieces.
[00:27:23] Speaker C: And then he. Mrs. Comes in.
[00:27:25] Speaker B: What have you done?
[00:27:26] Speaker C: What have you done?
[00:27:27] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:27] Speaker B: That is a horrible, horrible feeling because you really didn't do anything wrong. I mean, in hindsight, what. You don't even know what. You would have maybe put it on something soft.
[00:27:36] Speaker C: Yeah, I would have, obviously. But I didn't. What?
What I did, that was fake kicking me in the bollocks. What I did was not that asinine.
[00:27:47] Speaker B: But you still have more pinball glass.
You had a couple, right?
[00:27:52] Speaker C: It's not the point.
[00:27:53] Speaker B: I know. I'm just trying to, you know, kind
[00:27:56] Speaker C: of like my Mrs. Look on the bright side. Yeah, but what about this?
It doesn't matter. My brain has made the decision.
[00:28:01] Speaker B: I remember there was a show. I used to go to, a comedy show back in the early 2000s, where at the end of the show, they'd play this song. Always look on the bright side of Life. You heard that?
[00:28:12] Speaker A: It rings a bell. Yeah, like Quasimodo.
[00:28:15] Speaker B: But yet I think the guy that plays that song doesn't ever look on the bright side of life. Yeah, well, wishful thinking, I guess. It's all branding.
[00:28:24] Speaker C: It's just Branding.
[00:28:25] Speaker B: Yeah, people. That's why they come.
[00:28:27] Speaker C: I tell. I tell new. New producers. I said, pick the song that the people are going to hear as they leave.
[00:28:36] Speaker B: That's important.
[00:28:37] Speaker C: Make it a good one.
[00:28:39] Speaker B: Putting an earwig in their head for the next time.
[00:28:41] Speaker A: Right.
[00:28:42] Speaker C: There's a song by Super Grass called Time to Go, and I nearly went with that one.
[00:28:48] Speaker B: I don't know that one.
[00:28:49] Speaker C: For everything you've learned. But now it's time to go.
[00:28:54] Speaker B: But why do you think that song brings them back
[00:28:58] Speaker A: or.
[00:28:58] Speaker B: Look on the bright side.
[00:29:00] Speaker C: It's a classic song and it's from the best comedy movie ever made. Everyone knows the song.
[00:29:05] Speaker B: What's the movie?
[00:29:07] Speaker C: Life of Brian.
[00:29:08] Speaker B: That's never seen.
[00:29:10] Speaker C: Ever made.
[00:29:10] Speaker B: Never saw.
[00:29:11] Speaker A: You know, I don't think I have either.
[00:29:12] Speaker B: I hate Monty Python.
[00:29:13] Speaker A: Oh, really?
[00:29:13] Speaker B: Well, I hate British stuff.
[00:29:14] Speaker A: I enjoy them, but I just haven't seen that movie.
[00:29:18] Speaker C: You saying this to wind me up, obviously.
[00:29:20] Speaker A: No, no, I've never.
[00:29:20] Speaker B: You know, I hate British stuff and I've never watched Monty Pie. I didn't get it.
[00:29:25] Speaker C: You know, some American comedy movie ever made.
[00:29:28] Speaker A: There's a. Maybe I'll give it a rewatch.
[00:29:30] Speaker B: Got on VHS I can borrow.
[00:29:33] Speaker A: At 2pm in Dubuque, Iowa, on October 17, there is a presentation of local artists, local actors putting on a play that's a combination of Alfred Hitchcock's something or other, I can't remember, and Monty Python's brand of humor. So they're using Monty Python humor with an Alfred Hitchcock play. And I guess there's like, people that play, like 30 different characters. In Dubuque, Iowa, Borky and I are playing a show in Galena the night before. And Galena, we don't drive back after those shows. We stay somewhere. And Galena's packed this time of year. Every hotel is like 600.
[00:30:09] Speaker B: Really? Because of the leaves or something.
[00:30:11] Speaker A: Yeah, right, exactly. Like more picturesque time. Yeah, it's very. It's like a Hallmark card. Lots of people with lots of money like to go to Galena and spend it.
[00:30:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:30:20] Speaker A: So we'll just pick a place nearby. In those cases, we play this place probably like two, three times a year. And this time it's gonna be Dubuque. So I was looking up stuff to do the next day, and that is on the list that is going to be observed by the seaman over here.
[00:30:33] Speaker B: Ah, the seaman.
What? Famous? Famous what? US President made a home in Galena. Go ahead. Not you. You know, he doesn't know U.S. president
[00:30:46] Speaker C: Obama?
[00:30:47] Speaker B: No.
Ulysses S. Grant, Familiar with his work.
[00:30:50] Speaker A: Huge Statue of him?
[00:30:51] Speaker B: Yeah. Grant, I went.
[00:30:53] Speaker C: I went to DeKalb, Illinois, this. This past weekend.
[00:30:57] Speaker B: You're all over the place.
[00:30:59] Speaker C: Go there.
[00:31:00] Speaker B: I did actually.
[00:31:01] Speaker C: I did actually go to DeKalb for a replacement pinball.
[00:31:04] Speaker B: Backlash from the one you broke?
[00:31:06] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:31:06] Speaker B: You immediately got online like, I gotta fix this by getting a new one.
[00:31:09] Speaker C: That was the only way I could stop my brain.
[00:31:11] Speaker B: Yeah. And what did you get? You got a replacement?
[00:31:13] Speaker A: Yeah, I. Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to cut you off.
What's the replacement sex?
[00:31:20] Speaker C: It's not as good. It's more like an 80s one. It's called Tri Zone and it's clearly related to Logan's run.
[00:31:28] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:31:29] Speaker A: It's funny you say that. When I was in San Francisco, I lost a bracelet that has a lot of sentimental value to me. The clasp just came undone one day while I was walking around and I was all over the city. It could be anywhere. And the only way I was. I was very. I was upset about it. You know, the bracelet meant a lot to me. And the only way in my head that I could rectify the situation was to know I'm going to buy a replacement bracelet for this. And then it'll mean the same thing to me. In theory, you know, it'll carry the torch and it'll be fine.
[00:31:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:59] Speaker A: But until then, I'm going to. Even though I didn't break the clasp, you know, even though it was clasped correctly and all that, I still feel the guilt of having lost it until I can replace it.
[00:32:10] Speaker C: It's horrendous.
[00:32:13] Speaker A: Think about as you go to sleep.
[00:32:14] Speaker C: My decision making these days is just off.
[00:32:19] Speaker B: Well, listen, I don't want to get into. This is too depressing, but you really haven't given us much. I mean, you went down to Pilsen at rush hour on Friday. That was a mistake. But. And then the glass really wasn't your
[00:32:29] Speaker C: fault as you big things slept around
[00:32:32] Speaker B: or something or you know, laid your seed where you shouldn't.
What are you talking about? With your decision making. This is not bad.
[00:32:39] Speaker C: It's big and little.
[00:32:41] Speaker B: This is on. Yeah. Micro level stuff. Just every day like.
Like picking something. Something up off the counter and putting it in your mouth type of stuff. Like, why'd I do that? Ever do that? Like you didn't think. Like you see something, you don't know what it is and you put in your mouth like it's food and you're like, what the is that?
[00:32:57] Speaker A: I've never done that. No.
[00:32:58] Speaker C: Never done that.
[00:33:00] Speaker B: Did you like the tamale mark?
[00:33:01] Speaker C: Yes, it was good.
[00:33:02] Speaker B: You've just taken your first bite. Do you enjoy it? Yes, they're good.
[00:33:06] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:33:06] Speaker B: We're both picking pork out of our teeth, which is, you know, not a good feeling. All right, I. I want to ask you more.
[00:33:13] Speaker C: Is it present time?
[00:33:14] Speaker B: Almost. But I just want to ask you about San Francisco. And you went to. Just yes or no? Yes or no. You went to the bridge where the woman from Vertigo jumped in the water down to the thing.
[00:33:27] Speaker A: Not all the way to it. Saw it.
[00:33:29] Speaker B: Okay. You went to the legendary, greatest Chinese restaurant in the world, House of Nanking.
[00:33:35] Speaker A: No.
[00:33:36] Speaker B: You went and saw the San Francisco Giants play baseball.
[00:33:39] Speaker A: Nobody was playing while I was there. Yeah. There wasn't a single sports event.
[00:33:43] Speaker B: You didn't go to the stadium and. And think that there was. It was going on, and they were playing in another stadium and they were
[00:33:48] Speaker A: actually playing in Chicago.
[00:33:50] Speaker B: I'm not gonna go to the game, but it's cool to watch it here.
[00:33:52] Speaker C: I went down the Zigzag straight on a scooter.
[00:33:55] Speaker B: You did?
[00:33:56] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:33:56] Speaker B: In San Francisco.
[00:33:57] Speaker C: Yeah. And I got my mate to go down on his scooter first. And then I go, right, Zigzag Street.
[00:34:02] Speaker B: There's a famous Zigzag street there.
[00:34:04] Speaker A: It's the most crooked street in America. In the world, I think.
[00:34:07] Speaker B: Yeah. I don't know. I only been there once, and it's Zigzags.
[00:34:10] Speaker C: Taylor. Is it Taylor?
[00:34:12] Speaker A: I don't know. I saw a picture of it, but I don't.
[00:34:13] Speaker C: Anyways, uber famous car chases always go down it. You name it.
So I said to my mate, you go down first, because when I hit the bottom turn, I'm gonna have this scooter, like, cranked.
[00:34:27] Speaker B: What do you mean, like a Vespa scooter or like a.
[00:34:29] Speaker C: Just a little scooter? No, just a little scooter like you have.
[00:34:33] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:34] Speaker C: I said, when I hit that bottom run, I'm gonna be, you know, head down, ass up, crank. This thing's gonna be cranked. So I've got a picture of me just really. Just almost like.
[00:34:47] Speaker B: Really? He got a picture of you doing it? Yeah. That's fun.
[00:34:49] Speaker C: And he got one of me is scooting across the Golden Gate as well. We decided to go over Golden Gate on a scoot.
[00:34:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Did it clean you out, money wise over there?
[00:34:59] Speaker A: It's so expensive, they say I found it to be comparable to Chicago.
[00:35:02] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:35:03] Speaker A: Yeah. Every time.
[00:35:03] Speaker B: Just living there.
[00:35:04] Speaker A: Yeah. That's the thing. I think living there, I think one of the people that was with us, she was looking at Zillow at apartments, and I think the best she could find was $1,600, but didn't have a bathroom.
[00:35:15] Speaker B: This is a room for rent.
[00:35:16] Speaker A: It was just.
[00:35:17] Speaker C: Yeah, it's a high stack.
[00:35:20] Speaker B: You want to do some gifts and then we'll get into today's comedian. Maybe you've heard of him, although you had to have been born at the turn of the century.
9th, 20th century. Lenny Bruce. The great Lenny Bruce. Where's he wait, where's he been working? I haven't heard much.
[00:35:35] Speaker C: I thought Yakov Smirnoff was first.
[00:35:37] Speaker B: That's next week. Yakov Smirnoff, you're one behind.
[00:35:40] Speaker A: We're doing that a week from now.
[00:35:41] Speaker B: Yakov Shmirnov's two weeks.
[00:35:43] Speaker C: All right, let's do the presents.
[00:35:45] Speaker B: All right, well, let's do the presents.
[00:35:48] Speaker A: Who's going first?
[00:35:49] Speaker B: Oh, you got. Yeah, I, I only have one, One to give.
[00:35:56] Speaker A: I only have one to give each.
[00:35:57] Speaker B: Oh, well, this isn't really a present, but so I can just say this. I'm filling the coffers here with a hundred brand new Tootsie Roll Pops rules. You know, we have the Andes candies that are still here somehow. But you don't like the sound of my eating, so I'll just Sucking lollipop. So we got those going for us here.
[00:36:16] Speaker C: How many licks?
[00:36:18] Speaker B: Well, that's, that's age old question.
A one, two.
That's the commercial. You don't know.
[00:36:28] Speaker A: Then you got to go.
[00:36:29] Speaker B: They asked the owl how many legs? And he says, oh, you have to find out. And he goes, 1, 2. And then he can't resist it and he bites right into it.
[00:36:35] Speaker A: Yeah, well, he says, yeah.
[00:36:40] Speaker C: Oh, I thought you were doing Sling Blade again.
[00:36:42] Speaker B: Oh, I, I, I brought, I brought the, the, the script. I'm going to do something later.
All right, Mark, you're eager to pass out gifts and you're such a good gift giver. No, go ahead.
[00:36:54] Speaker C: All right.
I kind of, I had a good one.
The flea market's been off for two weeks. So that's been a meaning.
[00:37:02] Speaker B: They haven't had much or they've not been running.
[00:37:04] Speaker C: They're off. It's like Wrestlemania or some. And they don't open for it. So for you, I've got Rookie of the Year on vhs.
[00:37:12] Speaker B: Wonderful. Henry Rowan Gardner. They always bring him out.
[00:37:16] Speaker C: Yeah, the Cubs.
[00:37:17] Speaker B: That's a great one.
[00:37:18] Speaker C: With the, with great one. And then because, because you're an educator and a nihilist, I've got The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. If you've never read it.
[00:37:27] Speaker B: I've never read it. I don't even. I'm not even familiar with it.
[00:37:31] Speaker C: It's a. It's a bible about youth rebellion.
[00:37:34] Speaker B: Oh, the hell Raising rebels. The Mill Town youths. They'll take on anything or anybody inside or outside the law. This is a real pulp piece of pulp, kid.
[00:37:43] Speaker C: Get. No, it's classic.
[00:37:44] Speaker B: A whiff of it.
[00:37:45] Speaker C: Yeah, I know. It smells like an old book.
[00:37:48] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:37:48] Speaker C: Alan Solito from Nottinghamshire, for all you literary buffs out there. And it was. It was a. He always wrote very gritty.
[00:37:57] Speaker B: Anything of renown that we might know
[00:37:59] Speaker C: of over here in the Saturday Night Sunday Morning.
[00:38:03] Speaker B: Sounds familiar.
[00:38:04] Speaker C: It was a classic film starring Albert. Not Albert Finney. One of those types of.
[00:38:09] Speaker B: This looks like the Great Britain version of Our Outsiders. The Outsiders.
[00:38:15] Speaker A: Ah, yes.
[00:38:16] Speaker C: Well, this is about a kid that gets sent to borstal.
[00:38:19] Speaker B: That's what.
[00:38:19] Speaker C: How he rebels. It's like a youth reform school.
[00:38:22] Speaker B: Okay. That relates to what's going on in my home right now. I'm not gonna say any more than that, but. Yeah, I got a delinquent there.
[00:38:30] Speaker C: Oh, delinquency going on.
[00:38:32] Speaker B: Some delinquency.
[00:38:32] Speaker C: All right, now, I found a good one for.
[00:38:35] Speaker B: Oh, no, I want that. Oh, come on.
In the rapper, too?
[00:38:40] Speaker C: Yeah, in the rapper.
[00:38:41] Speaker B: Wait, why does he get that? And I get these tattered.
[00:38:44] Speaker A: Oh, man, that's so great. Give me that for the listeners. I was just handed a. In the wrapper Seinfeld trivia game. It's a board game.
[00:38:54] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Why did you give him that? You know, I love Seinfeld quoting. He does, too. Yeah, he deserves it.
[00:39:01] Speaker C: Well, you got the rookie of the year.
[00:39:02] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:39:03] Speaker A: Yeah. I don't have a VHS player, but I do have a coffee.
[00:39:05] Speaker B: Jealous over there.
[00:39:06] Speaker C: I've got this. I meant this isn't really a gift.
I've been annoying Christian by constantly buying new softball gloves that are really unneeded for the team, but we never had a lefty one.
[00:39:20] Speaker B: That's a fucking nice glove, you know?
[00:39:22] Speaker A: It is a nice.
[00:39:22] Speaker C: Yeah, that's a really nice. I mean, you know.
[00:39:25] Speaker B: Who's a lefty?
[00:39:27] Speaker C: We. This is like.
[00:39:29] Speaker A: Yeah. In case somebody shows up.
[00:39:30] Speaker C: Yeah, it's just like the communal bag because we're constantly having to rope in third parties.
[00:39:37] Speaker B: That's a nice piece of leather. Where'd you pick that up?
[00:39:40] Speaker C: That's from the Flea. The Seinfeld game. Three bucks.
[00:39:44] Speaker B: No way. In the wrapper.
[00:39:46] Speaker C: Yeah, in the wrapper.
[00:39:47] Speaker B: So you Know all the pieces are there.
[00:39:48] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:39:49] Speaker B: Fuck me.
[00:39:50] Speaker C: And then the glove was a fiver.
[00:39:52] Speaker B: Five for that. I gotta get to this flea. Are we gonna get one in? I'll give up my golf. My golf game's hard.
[00:39:58] Speaker C: You're golfing through the end of October through.
[00:40:00] Speaker B: Through the end of September.
[00:40:02] Speaker C: Well, October, you'll be fine then.
[00:40:03] Speaker B: We can go in October.
[00:40:05] Speaker C: The last couple of fleas are good because everyone just piles up 8 tons of Christmas shit they just want to get desperate to get rid of.
[00:40:12] Speaker B: Yeah. All right, I'm in.
[00:40:14] Speaker A: All right.
[00:40:14] Speaker B: You and me, we'll do breakfast first. You got a spot out there in Rosemont.
[00:40:18] Speaker C: No, six o' clock breakfast is. There's a guy who sells fresh baked goods and he's just at the place. Yeah, he's just dishing out of his boot.
[00:40:28] Speaker B: Or.
[00:40:30] Speaker C: Yeah, it is out of his boot.
[00:40:31] Speaker A: Oh, I forgot, that's a trunk.
[00:40:34] Speaker B: A lot of listeners love that story about the boot. They talk a lot about it out there. But anyway, eating out of the boot, that was also further evidence of your depression that you're eating food out of the back of some guy's car.
[00:40:48] Speaker A: Hey, Bill, I got a question for you.
[00:40:50] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:40:50] Speaker A: My buddy Andy that lives in St. Louis, texted me a few days. Most of our texts are, they. They're about Seinfeld. And he asked me, if Kramer had a podcast, what would it be named?
[00:41:03] Speaker B: You're asking me?
[00:41:04] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm putting you on the spot.
[00:41:05] Speaker C: Colossal Racist.
[00:41:07] Speaker A: Yeah, well, Kramer's not a racist.
[00:41:09] Speaker B: That's the name of the Colossal Racist. Kramer's not.
I'm gonna kick myself when you say it. So I don't know. Yeah, I can't think.
[00:41:18] Speaker A: Yeah, it's.
[00:41:19] Speaker B: The wine is getting to me.
[00:41:20] Speaker A: Oh, really? Yeah.
Yeah. Not off of fermented grapes.
[00:41:25] Speaker B: Kramer. Kramer.
[00:41:27] Speaker C: I don't know any of his catchphrases. It's gonna be.
[00:41:30] Speaker B: He doesn't really have catchphrases, does he?
[00:41:32] Speaker A: Oh, sure he does.
One of them I thought was. I thought of was feeling good all the time.
[00:41:40] Speaker B: He says that? Yeah.
[00:41:41] Speaker A: Remember the episode when they're trying to bust the accountant that they think is on cocaine all the time, but he's actually sniffing because of Jerry's mohair sweater?
And Kramer goes undercover and confronts him at the comedy club, and he's got the cigarette in his mouth and he chugs the beer with the cigarette in his mouth. He blows the smoke out after and he says, here's to feeling good all the time.
[00:42:01] Speaker B: Kramer says that?
[00:42:02] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:42:02] Speaker B: All right, what's the name of the podcast.
[00:42:04] Speaker A: Giddy up is another one.
[00:42:05] Speaker B: Giddy Up.
[00:42:05] Speaker A: That would be a good one. And then Cosmo Radio was the other one. I thought.
I thought of Snell O Vision, because his is.
You know how they all have their, like, their fake person name, Like George has Art Vandelay, Jerry's money packer, and Kramer's always Steven Snell. But it can't be Snell O Vision because you're not looking at a podcast, you're listening to it.
[00:42:30] Speaker C: Well, you could be if you had all the equipment.
[00:42:32] Speaker A: Yeah, but that, you know, primarily, I
[00:42:35] Speaker B: think you just went into this anecdote to prove that you deserve the board game, which you do, and obviously love the show.
[00:42:40] Speaker A: You can't think of.
[00:42:42] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't.
[00:42:42] Speaker A: So therefore, just like the episode where they couldn't decide who gets the bike and Newman has to. He says, we're gonna saw it in half. The old King Solomon thing. I just did that with this game.
[00:42:52] Speaker B: Christ. How do you remember stuff?
[00:42:53] Speaker A: I watch a lot of Seinfeld.
[00:42:54] Speaker B: I know, but still you remember all the details of all the episodes. You think you never smoked a marijuana cigarette?
[00:43:01] Speaker A: I was watching Seinfeld before marijuana cigarettes. Maybe that's it. So they like. That's pre existing in my memory.
[00:43:06] Speaker B: Yeah. It's in the long term.
[00:43:08] Speaker A: Right.
[00:43:09] Speaker B: All right.
I don't have anything for you, Mark. Sorry. I only have something for Christian. But you know what?
I'm working on it. I'll have it for you next week.
[00:43:25] Speaker A: But gifts there, though?
[00:43:27] Speaker B: No, this is the Tootsie Pops.
I'll give Mark his next week when we review Yakov Smirnoff. I'm still working on it.
I'm sure you guys will have gifts
[00:43:40] Speaker A: next week too, so.
[00:43:42] Speaker B: Christian, I can't throw this.
[00:43:43] Speaker A: It's okay.
[00:43:44] Speaker B: It's handed to him over there.
He's still.
Now, you know, I'm an artist and I do art. I have an art studio or had lease went up on that.
[00:43:56] Speaker A: Yeah, I like. The wrapping paper's got hearts on it.
[00:43:59] Speaker C: All right. Actually, you have to give me the glove back and you have to give me the book back then.
[00:44:03] Speaker B: Why?
[00:44:04] Speaker A: Oh, so we do it for next week.
[00:44:05] Speaker C: Yeah, I've run out of next week gifts.
[00:44:08] Speaker A: Okay, Well, I don't know what all these.
[00:44:09] Speaker C: No, I don't mind.
[00:44:10] Speaker A: I don't know what all these off camera looks are. Are you trying to tell us something with your eyes, Bill?
[00:44:14] Speaker B: No, no.
This is similar to when I gave you the bag of nuts and then took them back.
[00:44:20] Speaker A: Yeah, the. The fantasy football magazine.
[00:44:24] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:44:25] Speaker A: Oh, it's some sort of picture frame, huh?
[00:44:27] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, I put it in a frame.
[00:44:29] Speaker A: Camping trip.
[00:44:29] Speaker B: Nope.
What camping trip do. We went on?
[00:44:32] Speaker A: Right. What camping trip?
Oh, this is cool.
[00:44:36] Speaker B: I. I did that.
[00:44:37] Speaker A: You drew this?
[00:44:38] Speaker B: I drew that.
[00:44:39] Speaker A: No, I love it.
[00:44:39] Speaker C: Well, is it Cotter?
[00:44:41] Speaker B: No, it looks like it doesn't. That's 1970s William Joel. Billy Joel.
[00:44:48] Speaker A: Okay, great.
[00:44:49] Speaker B: You didn't know who it was?
[00:44:50] Speaker A: No, I didn't recognize him.
I'm glad you told me. I would have put it up.
[00:44:54] Speaker B: I don't. On my art, I don't.
I draw the celebrity, and then I'll put either their first name and then I leave it like a fill in the blank, like a hangman, so that you don't necessarily know who it is. And that one says the piano.
[00:45:08] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:45:09] Speaker B: Dash, Dash, dash.
[00:45:11] Speaker A: Very thoughtful.
[00:45:12] Speaker C: Mike Olson once gave me one with Klinger on it, and I thought it was Jeff Klinger, but it was Klinger from mash.
[00:45:18] Speaker B: What? Oh, he drew. He drew a clinger and gave me those.
[00:45:21] Speaker C: Profile.
Still got that somewhere.
[00:45:26] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, I'm working on one for you next week.
[00:45:30] Speaker A: Yeah, and the same thing. I only have one for Mark this week. And I'm working on one for you, Bill. Wink, wink for next week.
[00:45:37] Speaker B: All right. Give it to me next week.
[00:45:38] Speaker A: Okay. Next week I'll give you your gift.
[00:45:40] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:45:41] Speaker A: And this week I'll give Mark.
[00:45:42] Speaker B: Give Mark something. He didn't get anything from me.
[00:45:45] Speaker A: All right. I bought this at a little shop in Chinatown. This is Mark for your affinity, your recent affinity of bicycles.
[00:45:52] Speaker B: Yeah, that's the wheels. Is it a pin or a magnet?
Oh, for the refresh. Do you put magnets on your refrigerator?
[00:46:00] Speaker C: I think I had a million magnets at one point. I think my Mrs. Does.
And I thought it was one of them fridges that wouldn't stick. Stainless steel.
[00:46:12] Speaker B: Stainless steel sticks. It's steel.
[00:46:15] Speaker C: Well, anyway, she's got shit up there,
[00:46:18] Speaker A: so I can put some more now you can compete.
[00:46:20] Speaker B: Yeah. Some people don't like magnets on their fridge.
[00:46:24] Speaker A: Pretty cool how the wheel spin, isn't it?
[00:46:25] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:46:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:46:26] Speaker C: I once had an entire. I used to collect postcards with comedians on them and my entire fridge front
[00:46:35] Speaker B: was postcards with comedians.
[00:46:38] Speaker C: Yeah. Or funny stuff.
[00:46:40] Speaker B: Comedy postcards.
[00:46:41] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:46:42] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:46:42] Speaker C: Then when I got the rabbits, they would just pull them down and eat them.
[00:46:46] Speaker B: Yeah, they love.
[00:46:46] Speaker A: They jump up there.
[00:46:48] Speaker C: No, I mean, it was all the way down so they could get there.
[00:46:51] Speaker B: They eat cardboard and stuff like that, Right? They love.
[00:46:53] Speaker C: They just chew it. Yeah. They once pulled down A poster. It was a Laurel and Hardy poster that I'd paid 150 bucks for.
And I walked in the bedroom and it was down kind of behind the back of the bed. And I was like, oh.
And I just pulled it up as a slow reveal. And then it gets to the bottom.
[00:47:11] Speaker B: It's gone.
[00:47:12] Speaker C: Miss it?
[00:47:15] Speaker B: Because it was on it.
[00:47:15] Speaker A: It was.
[00:47:16] Speaker B: It was on the backing of a cardboard or something. Yeah, well, you don't have those rabbits anymore. I wonder if they would eat pinball glass as well.
Too soon.
[00:47:29] Speaker C: Too soon.
[00:47:31] Speaker B: All right, let's get into this comedian.
[00:47:33] Speaker A: All right.
[00:47:33] Speaker B: It's like hour and a half into this program. We've been catching up. It's. You know, this is why we can never cancel the show. Because I, you know, I know I need this, but I want to believe that you guys need this, too. We need time together.
[00:47:44] Speaker A: Two hours in, probably edit this down to around 50 minutes.
[00:47:46] Speaker B: Edit the racist stuff that marks at the beginning.
[00:47:48] Speaker A: Yeah. After we take out all the racist stuff, It'll be like 50 minutes in that.
[00:47:52] Speaker B: He was talking about Koreans.
[00:47:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:47:54] Speaker B: Mocking them in their way they talk.
[00:47:57] Speaker C: What did you used to call Adam Vinitari?
You had a nickname.
[00:48:01] Speaker B: I don't even know who he is. Oh, the kicker. I don't know.
I don't know.
[00:48:05] Speaker C: Vinnie.
Anyway.
Vinny.
[00:48:08] Speaker B: Vinatera. Yeah.
[00:48:10] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:48:11] Speaker B: Christian, you chose for us.
[00:48:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:48:12] Speaker B: And I'm really glad you did because.
[00:48:14] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:48:15] Speaker B: Watching this in black, it was like watching, you know, like a 8 millimeter.
[00:48:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:48:21] Speaker B: Film.
Grainy.
[00:48:25] Speaker A: Tough to hear.
[00:48:25] Speaker B: Tough to hear.
[00:48:27] Speaker A: Did you put the captions on?
[00:48:29] Speaker B: No, I did. It didn't.
[00:48:30] Speaker A: And even the captions couldn't understand most of it.
[00:48:33] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. 1965. Lenny Bruce in. I don't know what you're calling this. Lenny Bruce or. It's a thing. Like, it didn't really have a stand up.
[00:48:41] Speaker A: Yeah, I try. I did a little research, too, trying to find an actual name. And there is. There's just not one.
[00:48:45] Speaker B: It's just because back then, standups didn't have TV specials.
[00:48:48] Speaker A: No.
[00:48:48] Speaker B: Right. We get this. And that's what made me. When we. When I watched this thing about, like, we got to go all the way back. When did this start?
Like, when did they. When was the first stand up special and how it's evolved from the very beginning to what it is now. I think that's very interesting. But Lenny Bruce, 1965, you take it away. Why'd you choose it?
What's behind this choice?
[00:49:15] Speaker A: Well, you know, typically, I like to pick the Classics. And I think I picked a couple more contemporary ones in a row. Something like that. So I was trying to get back to my roots and I thought, well, how much further back can you get than Lenny Bruce' 1965?
I mean, I just. I kept searching for something. There is the recordings from Carnegie hall, but they're audio only, so I wasn't sure which. I think audio only would have been okay. You know, but I wanted to find something we could watch because we like to review how it looks too. Yeah.
And I just thought it'd be an interesting pick. You know, I've never listened to or seen any. I'm not familiar with Lenny Bruce at all except for the lore that surrounds him.
[00:49:55] Speaker B: Sure you never saw the film Lenny?
[00:49:58] Speaker A: No, didn't even know it existed until you just said that.
[00:50:00] Speaker B: I was always confused by that film. Dustin Hoffman, I don't know if he was nominated or won anything for it, but he played Lenny Bruce in the. In the film.
I always thought Lenny was like. He was like disabled and it was like a. Like Marty or like it was about Lenny from a.
[00:50:14] Speaker C: My radio. What radio?
[00:50:17] Speaker B: Radio? Yeah. What radio?
[00:50:20] Speaker A: The Cuba Gooding Jr. Is that it?
[00:50:23] Speaker B: Yeah, he was disabled in that movie. Anyway, I.
But I did end up seeing Lenny Bruce with Dustin Hoffman. I couldn't look at this without wishing that he was Dustin Hoffman. I prefer Dustin Hoffman as Lenny over Lenny Bruce as Valerie Perrine.
[00:50:39] Speaker C: Honey, in that I can't remember in Lenny. Yeah.
[00:50:43] Speaker B: I don't know.
But she was very come, comely woman.
[00:50:48] Speaker A: What does that mean?
[00:50:48] Speaker C: You're treading on very dangerous.
[00:50:51] Speaker B: Valerie Perrine. Who could deny the. The allure of 1960s Valerie Perrine? She was the one. And if I'm remembering her correct in Superman. Yes, yes. Oh, oh, yes.
Anyway, we're back.
[00:51:07] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:51:10] Speaker B: Yeah. So I. That's all I really that saw, but I don't think I ever saw his act other than in clips, you know, like history of comedy clips type stuff. And I expected more of an act.
[00:51:20] Speaker A: Yeah. This wasn't really an act, was it?
[00:51:22] Speaker B: I don't know. I don't know.
[00:51:24] Speaker C: Have you read the book?
[00:51:25] Speaker B: No.
[00:51:26] Speaker C: I think it was Bob Woodward, the guy that wrote the thing.
[00:51:28] Speaker B: He won all the President's Men.
[00:51:30] Speaker C: Yeah, he did a Lenny book and he explained that by this time he was basically just this rambling wreck, like the things. And he would just go on stage and talk about his legal.
And in the end the audience would just like walk out and be like, this is so tedious. And that is what this is.
[00:51:50] Speaker B: That's what we saw.
[00:51:51] Speaker A: Right? He was. Yeah, basically he was. He was just going through. What did he have in his hand? The. The entire like court document, you know, kind of outlying is because, you know, for those that aren't Familiar, before this 1965 special, he had gotten in trouble a few times.
Twice. Once in San Francisco, then Chicago, then New York for obscenity. Was arrested three times, found guilty twice. One, the one, the one in San Francisco found not guilty, then the next year in Chicago found guilty, but that was reversed by the Supreme Court. And then a couple years later arrested again in New York City. That one, he was found guilty and the Supreme Court refused to review it. However, Post. Humorous post humiliously. Huh.
[00:52:34] Speaker B: Posthumously.
[00:52:35] Speaker A: Great. In 2003 they reversed it.
[00:52:38] Speaker B: Really?
[00:52:39] Speaker A: They pardoned? Yep.
[00:52:40] Speaker B: Pardon Long after his death.
[00:52:42] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:52:42] Speaker B: When did he die?
[00:52:43] Speaker A: 1970. Oof.
[00:52:45] Speaker B: How? Overdose or something.
[00:52:46] Speaker A: Overdose on morphine. I was on a. Naked. On this bathroom floor with a needle in a burnt bottle cap.
[00:52:51] Speaker C: I. Oh my. I once bought this iron on, you know. Iron ons?
[00:52:56] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:52:57] Speaker C: I once bought this book with iron ons and it. One of the iron ons was Lenny Bruce dead on the bathroom floor.
And it said another dead hero. And I put it onto a T shirt and gave it to Matt Dwyer.
[00:53:09] Speaker A: Huh.
[00:53:10] Speaker B: Why did you give it to Matt Dwyer?
[00:53:12] Speaker C: Because it's Dwyer esque shite, isn't it?
[00:53:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:53:15] Speaker C: Dead Lenny Bruce T shirt.
[00:53:17] Speaker A: Interesting story about that photo. Phil Spector bought the photographs from the journalists that found that took them because he didn't want them being released to the public.
[00:53:25] Speaker C: But they were Mad magazine, I guess.
[00:53:27] Speaker A: So eventually I don't know what happened there, but he. Yeah, he didn't want him going into a newspaper so he.
Phil Spector bottom actually.
[00:53:34] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:53:34] Speaker B: Some relationship or something.
[00:53:35] Speaker A: They were friends.
[00:53:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:53:37] Speaker C: During the week gap between this episode and the next episode, I'm gonna go down the basement and I'm gonna bring that. You still have the iron Everything up,
[00:53:46] Speaker B: You have the iron on?
[00:53:47] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:53:48] Speaker B: I thought you said you already put it on a shirt.
[00:53:49] Speaker C: It's in a book.
[00:53:51] Speaker B: A picture of it.
[00:53:52] Speaker C: Yeah. Was like a Mad magazine book. And you. Oh, it was like pages and you. I think you'd probably get another print out of it if you want one.
[00:54:01] Speaker B: I don't think I would walk around wearing.
[00:54:03] Speaker A: Is that full naked like dog.
[00:54:06] Speaker C: No, it's like his chest upwards and he's like,
[00:54:10] Speaker A: yeah, it's okay.
That's tasteless.
[00:54:13] Speaker C: Funny because the rest of them is like, you know, a fake pair of tits. And I'm with stupid and then dead Lenny Bruce on the floor.
Anyway, I'll get it. You can see. Yeah, I'd like to see it, but next week. So the book said by this point, the book says that his peak was his Carnegie Hall. Like that.
That was him at Carnegie Hall. Carnegie just. Absolutely.
Because apparently it absolutely crapped it down a snow that day. And he really thought, my show at Carnegie hall, all right, is going to be canceled. But people packed it out and he raised his game and gave the best ever.
[00:54:56] Speaker A: That was.
[00:54:57] Speaker C: But by the time this thing was taped, he was just totally at sea.
[00:55:03] Speaker A: He was bankrupt by this point, wasn't he?
[00:55:04] Speaker C: Y.
I don't know.
[00:55:06] Speaker A: Did it say that in the.
I can't remember what I read separately or what it said in the beginning because, you know, it flashes up those little.
What do you call them? I don't know, title sequence.
[00:55:17] Speaker B: Screens, captions.
[00:55:18] Speaker A: Yes.
So maybe it mentioned it there, but if not. Yeah, he was bankrupted and.
Yeah. How many people do you think were in that room that day?
[00:55:26] Speaker B: A smattering?
[00:55:27] Speaker C: Yeah. 100, maybe.
[00:55:28] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:55:29] Speaker B: It sounded like open. Like when you record your shows at the open mic. Right. Just very little laughter, a lot of silence.
[00:55:38] Speaker C: Well, very little after. Because it was boring as shit.
[00:55:40] Speaker A: Yeah, it was.
[00:55:41] Speaker C: And it was rambling. Like sometimes it seemed like sometimes he was doing the act that he'd been nicked for.
[00:55:48] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:55:49] Speaker C: But then he would go back to talking about the case.
[00:55:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:55:52] Speaker C: There was no clear delineation. So your mind's like, wait, is he back to talking about the case? Was he just doing bits that were in it?
[00:56:00] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm.
[00:56:02] Speaker C: Total bollocks.
[00:56:03] Speaker A: He was going line by line through that document that he had. And he was just kind of saying, oh, yeah, and they got me for this one. And what was it. What was I saying for that? Oh, yeah, yeah. This was the bit. Wait, no, that wasn't the bit. Oh, yeah, this is the bit. And he would do the bit and kind of like. Remember as he was going. Those parts, some of them were funny, of course. Cause it might be a good bit. But yeah, there was, you know how we talk about some of the comics that just. There's no segues or there's. Well, I guess we're talking more about, like, the identity comics. You know, there's not. Like a lot of this leads to another thing. To another thing. This was maybe the most random for that reason.
[00:56:40] Speaker B: Random? What?
[00:56:41] Speaker A: Random? Just having no relationship to the next bit, you know, because he's just reading a court document.
I. I thought It'd be very interesting if he actually went more into how the process went of the guy, the court. What, what was it? The court aide or whatever that has to go out and it was a
[00:56:56] Speaker B: cop that would transcribe his, Transcribe it.
[00:56:58] Speaker A: And then somebody's got to stand up in court and read it.
[00:57:01] Speaker B: The transcription.
Yeah, I thought that'd be, that was actually kind of funny how he talked about, you know.
[00:57:06] Speaker A: Right. I, I, I was, I wanted more of that. I wanted, like, him to, like, do a whole routine about that.
[00:57:11] Speaker B: Yeah. It took me about halfway, halfway through, but quarter of the way through to realize, oh, he's not going to be doing.
[00:57:18] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:57:19] Speaker B: And it became very difficult to listen to because you don't know. Your ear doesn't know what to tune into. What is like, what, what?
[00:57:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:57:29] Speaker B: But my wife, she often does comes in the room while watching these, and I was like, what do you, who are you listening to? I go, lonnie Bruce. She goes, oh, I know about him because she's a tutor and had researched him with one of her high school students or whatever.
And she said he canceled himself. Right. He's the first. He's like the original person to get canceled. And I thought, oh, yeah, that's kind of true. Like, of the comedians who have been canceled in recent years or during the height of that cancel culture, you know, like, he's the og.
[00:58:00] Speaker A: Yeah, me too.
[00:58:02] Speaker B: Canceler. He canceled. I mean, he got arrested. But, you know, like.
[00:58:07] Speaker C: Well, I always think of canceled is the, the honor, unelected court of public opinion. Yeah. I don't know what that's told by.
[00:58:16] Speaker B: Right.
[00:58:16] Speaker C: The powers.
[00:58:17] Speaker B: Right. But I imagine a majority of society also, you know, shut him down or tuned him out or discredited him.
[00:58:24] Speaker C: Yeah. The Catholics went after him like rabid.
[00:58:27] Speaker B: Well, I think the Jews as well, anyone of any kind of religious bent, you know.
Yeah. He
[00:58:35] Speaker A: at some points, pretty gratuitous use of the N word.
[00:58:39] Speaker B: Some N word. Yeah.
[00:58:40] Speaker C: Some F word.
[00:58:42] Speaker B: The C word, which you.
[00:58:43] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, he does.
[00:58:44] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:58:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:58:45] Speaker C: I was perked up there.
[00:58:46] Speaker B: Yeah, I bet you did.
Yeah. And he used it in a very not nice way.
[00:58:55] Speaker A: Maligning way.
[00:58:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Not enough humorous way. Not the way some people I know use it, you know.
[00:59:00] Speaker A: Yeah. It wasn't friendly, not as a throwaway
[00:59:03] Speaker B: line, but as a direct attack as
[00:59:06] Speaker A: the way that the word was invented.
[00:59:07] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:59:10] Speaker C: I don't know. This was a weird watch for me because I told you last week, I had this, I had that. You know, in the 90s, there was comedians would want to be Bill Hicks and blah, blah, blah. And I. I swallowed that Kool Aid, I bought Lenny Bruce albums and I thought, oh, this is gonna. This is it. This is like the danger and bollocks.
Don't even try to read that book that the guy wrote about him. My God, it is 400 pages and it just grinds on.
[00:59:43] Speaker B: Yeah, I. I mean, again, this isn't a representation of his act, I suppose, or his good act or whatever. But I don't think if. Even if I saw that I would enjoy him or his comedy. Right.
Or appreciate him. But obviously he's in the canon, maybe even the Mount Rushmore of comedians. So it begs the question, why. What is so great about Lenny?
[01:00:07] Speaker A: He's just among the first, you know,
[01:00:09] Speaker B: first to do what he did. See Word.
[01:00:12] Speaker A: Yeah. To push the envelope the way he did.
[01:00:15] Speaker C: Because he started off as a Catskills guy.
Yeah. He was just a regular like guy. And then one day he fell in with the jazz. I think what they were saying was. Yeah. The draw. Well, I think what it was. So what happened was, was they would put comedians between strippers in strip clubs, burlesque shows. Yeah. And you could imagine what that.
What a tough crowd that would be.
He went through that kind of mill and they said he started talking more gritty and more. Because he's like, I'm standing there doing knock knock jokes and then the beer thrown at you. The pervs are just get off.
[01:00:59] Speaker A: Right.
[01:01:00] Speaker C: So I think that's why he started.
[01:01:01] Speaker A: He read the room.
[01:01:02] Speaker B: Yeah.
It reminds me of when I opened for Dr. Dirty John Valby at the Hampton Beach Casino. That crowd was.
Yeah, they weren't there to see me.
[01:01:13] Speaker A: I wonder if that's how Lenny Bruce met his wife then. Do you know that he. Oh, yeah, he married a stripper. And yeah, they were together for a long time. They had a daughter named Kitty who just died last May 13th. Yeah, it was her.
[01:01:25] Speaker B: What does she and do. She an artist of any kind?
[01:01:28] Speaker A: I don't think so. No, no.
Died of a blood clot.
[01:01:33] Speaker C: She would have barely known him because I think he died when she was about 4.
[01:01:38] Speaker B: Anywho, who cite in your research or do you know who cites Lenny Bruce as an influence of, you know, the great comedians that came after Many. Right.
Just because he was fearless, because he didn't give a. He would just say whatever. And if you got arrest. He didn't give a. Just what, you know, not necessarily you liked his comedy or what he had to say, but that he would say
[01:01:59] Speaker C: anything Yeah, I don't think they're like, they're saying his comedy is of any influence. Influence. It's just too dated now.
[01:02:04] Speaker A: But I've had the REM song, It's the End of the World as We Know it. Stuck in my head all day because of the line, lenny Bruce is not afraid.
[01:02:11] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, I forgot that's in that.
He reminded me of Chicago. Legendary Chicago comedian who worked himself a real nice NBC development deal.
Dave Stebbins at the.
You know, when he's sort of at the end of his proverbial rope, you know, he would just go on stage and just.
It was just a. A rambling wreck, right? Yep.
[01:02:39] Speaker C: Yeah, that was the 90s.
[01:02:41] Speaker B: Yep, yep, yep, yep.
Well, I. Again, I think it's. It's great for us to go back. I want to go back. I think this is the farthest we've ever went. Oh, 165. How much farther can we go back? Uncle Milty, who is the first stand up comedian go.
[01:02:56] Speaker A: Did any of, like the Marx Brothers do stand up?
[01:02:58] Speaker B: Marx Brothers. Like, I don't know, like, that's. Yeah, like when it's stand up.
[01:03:02] Speaker A: Smothers Brothers. When were they?
[01:03:04] Speaker B: 60s, 60s, maybe late 50s.
[01:03:07] Speaker A: Were they dirty?
[01:03:09] Speaker B: No, but tongue in cheek.
[01:03:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:03:11] Speaker B: You know, you. Don't you. The.
The wizard of comedy do not know when.
[01:03:18] Speaker C: Well, you need.
[01:03:19] Speaker B: Who the first comedian needs.
[01:03:20] Speaker C: Preface it with American comedian.
[01:03:23] Speaker B: Okay, so didn't we invent the. The medium of stand up comedy?
[01:03:27] Speaker C: Stuart Lee says that what we did or you did, The Americans invented jazz and stand up comedy, two American contributions to the arts.
[01:03:38] Speaker A: What about blues?
[01:03:40] Speaker C: Well, blues is a derivative of jazz, isn't it?
[01:03:43] Speaker A: Technically, I guess so.
[01:03:46] Speaker B: Hey, Siri, who was the first stand up comedian?
[01:03:54] Speaker A: Charlie Case. Also spelled. Charlie Case is often credited with the first form of stand up comedy, performing humorous monologues without props or costumes.
This is from Wikipedia.
[01:04:06] Speaker B: Next week, tune into the show when we'll be watching Charlie Case.
Vaudevillian vaudeville and music.
[01:04:15] Speaker C: In England it was called Music hall, but that's got to be where it is.
[01:04:19] Speaker A: Weren't there. Weren't there sort of people doing monologues, stuff like that during Shakespearean times? Times? Tams.
No, no. Nobody would stand there and just like give a speech alone.
[01:04:32] Speaker B: Did Bruce have a. No, I don't. Maybe. Yeah, they give monologues, but that's not the same as stand up comedy.
[01:04:37] Speaker A: Yeah, I guess not. Well, did he have a.
[01:04:40] Speaker B: Was he holding a mic or a mic stand? I don't remember.
[01:04:42] Speaker A: Yeah, there was a mic stand. He Would lean on it. Sometimes he did the old.
[01:04:46] Speaker B: In front of it or did he have it in his hand? Oh, yeah, I remember. I remember he was leaning.
[01:04:50] Speaker C: That was his first joke, was the fucking Catholic bullshit. Yeah.
[01:04:55] Speaker B: Well, Lenny Bruce.
Go ahead, give it your.
[01:05:00] Speaker A: I gotta stop swearing too. I've been swearing too much. I feel like.
[01:05:03] Speaker B: More bad choices.
[01:05:03] Speaker A: We sound dumb.
[01:05:04] Speaker C: Bad choices. Yeah. Starting with my mouth.
[01:05:07] Speaker B: Can you think of another comedian that we've reviewed that brought out a police report and that he was involved in and talked about it on stage?
[01:05:17] Speaker A: Kind of.
What's his name? Mike Birbiglia. Traffic ticket.
[01:05:22] Speaker B: Yeah, that's right. You would think if Lenny Bruce were performing today, you'd have a big screen. He'd have the document up there and a laser pointer. Oh, yeah.
Birbiglia stole that part of the. I believe. Yeah.
Well, let's go around. Out of five.
Jesus. A tough one. It's yours to Christian too.
[01:05:43] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay.
Out of five millimeters of heroin.
[01:05:50] Speaker C: I agree.
[01:05:54] Speaker B: A bottle cap.
[01:05:55] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:05:56] Speaker B: Bottle caps of heroin?
[01:05:57] Speaker A: Yeah. Out of five bottle caps of morphine, actually.
[01:05:59] Speaker B: Of morphine?
[01:06:00] Speaker A: Yep.
Isn't that what people do when they can't get heroin? Is that deal?
[01:06:06] Speaker B: I don't know.
[01:06:06] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:06:07] Speaker B: What's morphine? Yeah, morphine. And is heroin really?
[01:06:10] Speaker A: Is it. What's the. What's the thing that people do?
What the hell's his name? Burrows writes about it.
Anyway, I give it. Out of five bottle caps. Yeah. I mean, this is two bottle caps.
[01:06:24] Speaker B: Two bottle caps of heroin or morphine.
You Marcus.
[01:06:27] Speaker A: Methadone.
[01:06:28] Speaker B: Methadone.
Oh, we're judging the act. We always. As much as we might want to judge the person, we're judging the act.
[01:06:37] Speaker C: Well, the act is terrible.
[01:06:38] Speaker B: It's terrible.
[01:06:39] Speaker C: Rambling, shy.
[01:06:40] Speaker B: It's unreasonable.
[01:06:41] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:06:42] Speaker C: One.
[01:06:42] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:06:43] Speaker C: I liked his little what's it?
Anecdote. Who's the guy?
[01:06:49] Speaker B: The dad from Reginald Bell Johnson. From Family Matters?
[01:06:53] Speaker C: No, the dad from Arrested Development.
Shelley Berman.
[01:06:58] Speaker B: Oh, Shelly Berman. He talks about Shelly Berman.
[01:07:02] Speaker A: Yeah, That's a dad from. Jeffrey Tambor is the dad from Arrested
[01:07:06] Speaker C: Development, not Arrested Development.
Curb your enthusiasm.
[01:07:12] Speaker A: Oh, really?
[01:07:14] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:07:16] Speaker B: Shelly Berman were mates.
[01:07:18] Speaker C: Well, they were on that circuit. Shelly Berman, who was the borsch belt?
Well, the more sort of hip. Not sure. Who was the other guy? Mort Saul.
[01:07:27] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, yeah.
[01:07:27] Speaker C: Shelly Burman.
Yeah.
So, yeah, the Shelly Berman anecdote was good because it was Chicago. I've met Shelly Berman, Blah, blah, blah. So I'll give it one just for having that in it.
[01:07:39] Speaker B: Okay. I'm gonna give it.
Two. I mean, We're. We're looking at maybe. I mean, if, if.
And again, I know it's the him being up there in 1965 saying these filthy things. I'm going to give it a.3 bottle caps of morphine because the act is terrible. But it was despite having a script in his hand. Not the script, something in his hand. He just. I don't even like. I appreciate as, you know, someone who just shoots completely from the hip, has no idea where it's going to go, bombs completely for an hour and does not slow down and keeps going, does not need laughs and says some pretty racy things.
You know, it's hard for me to gauge what it's like in the day to say these things, but. And so for that fearlessness and for, you know, opening the door to that, I'm gonna give him three bottle caps of morphine.
[01:08:34] Speaker A: All right? Then we average out at two.
[01:08:36] Speaker B: Yeah, great. I still want to have to give him a certificate. All right. Yeah, I still owe a certificate.
[01:08:42] Speaker A: Pricey.
[01:08:42] Speaker B: Whoever it was the last time. Next week. It's my pick. As you know, we've already previewed it. I've been waiting for this since watching Kumail Nanjiani, who owes a debt to this man. Of course, I'm talking about Russia's own Yakov Smirnoff. We'll be watching him in his special Live from Moscow, Idaho.
So tune in then.
